Cook County residents know it simply as “The Carolyn.” Local and touring theatre artists and musicians know it as the perfect venue for powerhouse performances. And what everyone knows about the Carolyn Harris Center for the Performing Arts is that any time the curtain opens here, something special is sure to follow. Like the person it was named for, “The Carolyn” exemplifies arts the Cook County way: quality and creativity with a lot of personality.
The picture of cultural commitment and arts success.
Teacher, leader and tireless champion of education and the arts, Carolyn Harris was also a founder of the Cook County Council for the Arts, a thriving organization that today sponsors a range of arts activities, including summer arts camps for children. And even as new generations are instilled with a love of the arts, care for the past and for our historic architecture is also part of the county’s unique personality, evident in the rich character of structures like the “Watermelon Building,” now home to the Cook County Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S. Post Office and Museum, graced with Alice Flint’s New Deal mural, and now home to the Cook County Historical Society.
Year-round, around the region.
While Cook County’s year-round calendar is full—from local and touring performances at “The Carolyn,” to celebrations and festivals like the Daylily Festival, to quarterly events at the Cook County Archives and Historical Museum—the county’s central location puts the entire region’s musical and arts offerings just a few miles away.
