Area Profile

Verdant views, growing opportunity.

Since its earliest days as a 19th century settlement, Cook County has been in the business of growing, beginning with crops such as cotton, peanuts, vegetables and livestock including chicken and cattle. Nestled in the center of South Georgia, this 233-square-mile county, with its temperate weather and rich soil, has always offered the natural resources for the finest and most bountiful harvests.

In the 20th century, additional resources in labor, logistics and innovative leadership allowed Cook County to begin growing something new: industrial and commercial opportunity. Global and national leaders like as BASF and Sanderson Farms opened operations here to take advantage of the area’s ample land and expanding assets, including the county’s South Central Georgia location, on I-75 and US Highway 41, just 40 miles north of the Florida line and halfway between Atlanta and Orlando.

Just above the line, far above average

Today, while agriculture remains an economic pillar, involving over 80% of the county’s acreage, Cook County is rapidly growing its role as a strategic industrial destination. With a combined population of 17,000, the county’s four cities—Adel (the county seat), Cecil, Lenox and Sparks—are meeting the challenges of the 21st century with intelligence and care, leveraging location advantages that include not only a superb transportation network but also a robust workforce of 115,000 within 30 miles.

And just as verdant countryside provides the perfect setting for the growth of agricultural crops, Cook County’s South Georgia Megasite and other developable locations offer over 4,000 prime acres ideal for industrial purposes, supported Georgia’s finest incentives to nurture success.

Reaching, relaxing, realizing your goals

A Georgia Work-Ready Community with an educated population, Cook County is prepared for productivity. The county’s K-12 students are learning in all new school facilities, and graduating high school at a rate that is significantly higher than the state average and with the highest test scores in a 17-county region in Career Readiness. Training at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College further insures worker viability, with three 4-year colleges and universities in the area, including Valdosta State only minutes away.

While educational excellence and opportunities help make Cook County a great place to bring up a family, we also roll out quality neighborhoods and outdoor recreation that is second to none at the Reed Bingham State Park. Plus, Cook County’s location puts a trip to a pristine Atlantic beach (or to Disneyworld) or to the sugar-white beaches of Destin less than a half day’s drive away, and the arts and cultural offerings of Atlanta less than 3 hours away. Add in the ample arts and cultural offerings right here in the Daylily Capital of Georgia, and it’s clear that Cook County is a great place to put down roots and grow professional and personal opportunity.
