Spreading out over 350 acres, fragrant with water lilies, filled with fish and rich in wildlife, the lake at Reed Bingham State Park has always offered a spectacular venue for recreation and relaxation. And once the Park was able to secure pontoon boats, kayaks and canoes for public use, the situation was perfect—almost. There was no shelter for the new craft.
And that’s when the civic group, Friends of Reed Bingham, swung into action, collaborating with state park groups while collecting and donating funds as well as sweat equity to build a canoe/kayak shelter and a pontoon boat storage shelter. Today, boaters and kayakers enjoy added convenience and safety in their Reed Bingham experience, while the Park’s investment in equipment is better protected.
That’s how life works in Cook County: When there’s a need, we have it covered.
Connecting for Community:
Cook County is the kind of place where naturally sociable residents actively work for a better community at every turn, whether it’s implementing improvements or making social connections that strengthen the fabric of life—frequently both at the same time. As when Friends Helping Friends fire up the grill, for example, to make delicious sausage dogs and deer sausage to help raise funds for Cook County Family Connection, a non-profit organization that networks with 20 other non-profits to aid and serve area children and families.
And that’s how connections work in Cook County, person to person, civic group to group, weaving together interests and aims. Whether it’s the Lions Club collecting eyeglasses for children in need or the Garden Club helping make our outdoors a sight to behold, whether it’s Retired Teachers gathering to stay current or the Cook County Historical Society gathering to explore our rich past, Cook’s community spirit moves our quality of life to higher levels every day.
