During the Monday, Aug. 3, meeting of Adel Mayor/Council, City Manager John Flythe said there has been some discussion within the community concerning the Alabama Road project.
Flythe wanted to clarify that in a meeting held over a year ago with the City, County, and Department of Transportation at the County Commissioners’ Office, the proposed bypass road was discussed. Over the past few years, more than $200,000 has been spent in engineering fees and utility relocation work on the proposed bypass road, and this project was in process long before the Walmart discussions began.
At that meeting held over a year ago, DOT officials made it very clear that they would not participate with any funding assistance concerning a road that would service a commercial establishment, such as Walmart. “The City would have to step up to make any road improvements,” Flythe said.
Recently, the City Council voted in support of a document that, if the City agreed to, assured Walmart would locate here. This retail establishment should bring to our community as a whole, through sales taxes and ad valorem taxes, an estimated amount greater than $1.5 million per year, Flythe said.
The DOT is now concerned with the City improving the existing Alabama Road and not proceeding with the Alabama Road bypass project, according to Flythe.
Local officials are looking at proceeding with the bypass project around 2017.
DOT officials are concerned there will be a problem with traffic trying to exit Alabama Road and turning west, as well as the traffic exiting I-75 and trying to get in the left hand turn lane to turn onto Alabama Road, Flythe said.
Years ago, when the Williams family expressed their traffic concern at the time the DOT was reconstructing the interstate exchange, the DOT assured there would be no problem with their plan, Flythe said.
Now it seems there is, he added.
“Without the Alabama Road improvements, we would not have Walmart coming here,” Flythe reiterated.
