The Adel Mayor/Council held a public hearing Monday, Dec. 7, on a request to annex a 10-acre tract and a 2.681-acre tract, off of U.S. Highway 41 south of Adel, into the Adel city limits for the new Custom Ag Formulators industry.
Williams Investment Co. brought the petition requesting annexation of the property and rezoning from Agriculture (AU) to Heavy Industrial (H-I).
Brent Dixon, chairman of the Adel Industrial Development Authority, spoke in favor of the request.
He said the Fresno, Calif.-based Custom Ag Formulators plans to locate the company’s new facility here to reflect its large market share in the Southeast. The industry plans to build a 20,000-square-foot facility and then possibly expand to 40,000 square feet for future business growth, Dixon said. Custom Ag Formulators will be hiring locally, 16 employees initially.
No one spoke in opposition to the annexation request. Adel citizen Aulton White remarked that he was not necessarily opposed to the new industry but he questioned whether “hazardous plant materials” would be involved in the production and what issue that would create for the community in that area.
Mayor Buddy Duke, who also serves as Economic Development Commission chairman, requested permission from the City Council to address White’s question.
Duke replied, “At this time the company is operating in California and is not using hazardous materials to operate with, and at this time, we have not been brought privy to any knowledge of the use of hazardous materials that are going to be here. So, we are not aware of any hazardous materials, sir.”
White interjected, “Things like ammonium nitrate, things like that? …” Duke continued, “We are not aware of any of those. We have done our own work on the company itself, and we don’t feel like it will be a threat to the environment nor the people or population of our City and the County.”
The Council then closed the public hearing and returned to regular session.
City Manager John Flythe conducted the first reading of an ordinance for annexing and rezoning the property. The second reading will be held at the next regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 21, and the Council will consider adoption of the ordinance at that time.
