The new 24-hour-a-day Walmart store in Adel, scheduled to open at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, is moving closer to completion as associates are stocking the shelves in preparation for the grand opening.
The approximately 123,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter, located at 351 Alabama Road, will include a full line of groceries and a wide assortment of merchandise.
“We’re just about ready and preparing to open our doors,” said store manager Marcus Johnston. “We’re excited to be a part of the Adel community.”
The Adel Walmart will feature the first sign concept of its kind for the retailer in the State of Georgia, black backgrounds with white letters intended to make it easier for customers to see what is on each aisle. Lighting throughout the store is the more energy efficient LED.
Orange signs promote the “Pickup Today” program. Customers may place an order online for any Walmart product that is not food-related. “We will shop for you and have the item you want available for free pickup at the counter in the store,” Johnston said. You may shop a million more items on Walmart.com.
Adel Walmart will have “a store-of-the-future look and feel,” Johnston said.
Adel Walmart will feature a pharmacy, with Late Lawsonbody from Acworth as the manager and staff pharmacist. The store will have more than 200 kinds of prescription drugs available for just $4 per doctor’s order. The pharmacist also will give the shots for immunizations including shingles, pneumonia, Tdap – tetanus and diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), hepatitis A and hepatitis B, and HPV – human papillomavirus. This service will be available year round.
Garden Center merchandise will be available in the store’s interior at the south end.
Two certified opticians have been hired for the Adel Walmart Vision Center. Customers will be able to bring their doctors’ prescriptions to the store and pick up their new lenses. The opticians are able to install lenses in new frames and make adjustments. “Our eventual goal is to have an optometrist on staff,” Johnston said. Office and waiting area space has been built in the Vision Center for the doctor.
Vision screenings will be offered on Adel Walmart’s grand opening day. Jarrod Baker will serve as Vision Center manager.
The Photo Lab will offer the convenience of customers being able to go online with a Walmart account and send the photos to the store for processing. Passport photo services will be provided.
Employees will be available to test and install vehicle batteries in Auto Care. In the fullservice Paint Department, customers will be able to mix their own paints. Firearms and hunting and fishing licenses will be sold in Sporting Goods. The store will make keys for houses and vehicles, even chipped keys for newer vehicles.
The Walmart Connection Center will offer wireless plans, including Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and the Walmart Family Plan.
The food area will sell beer (hot and cold) and wine, a big assortment of dairy products and yogurt, and top-grade meat and poultry. The bakery will offer French bread baked fresh every day as well as decorated cakes for such events as birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations. The deli will sell rotisserie chicken, popcorn shrimp and chicken. $5 pizzas will be sold from 4 to 7 every day.
Adel’s Walmart Supercenter will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except for Christmas. Walmart has hired about 200 employees to handle that volume of business. The store has eight assistant managers, 20 department managers, and seven customer service managers. The store has tenant space available on the interior for a leading national business. The tenant business will be announced at a later date.
Johnston said Walmart will have a positive economic impact on Cook County. Most of the associates are from this community; several are from Moultrie and Valdosta. Local officials anticipate that Walmart will generate a tremendous amount of sales tax to help support local projects, ranging from roadwork to school athletic facility improvements.
Marcus Johnston is from Eufaula, Ala. He previously worked with the Phenix City, Ala., Walmart. He has been a Walmart associate for two decades.
