Hundreds of local residents turned out at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, for the grand opening ceremony of Walmart Store 7194 in Adel. The first few days after the official opening were believed to be among the busiest ever for a new Walmart anywhere in the nation.
The Adel-Cook County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting prior to the general public entering thestore for the first time. During the event, an honor guard from Moody Air Force Base posted colors, Lynn Williams (?) sang the National Anthem, and Pastor Jerry Lewis with Freedom Worship Church in Lenox gave the dedicatory prayer.
Store Manager Marcus Johnston thanked the community for their support and Cleveland Construction for their hard work in building the 123,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter, located at 351 Alabama Road. Johnston also introduced the store’s management team.
“Today is a special day,” Adel Mayor Buddy Duke said in his welcoming remarks. The Walmart project has been on the horizon for many years, he said. “It’s finally here. We can see it, smell it, and touch it, and if we go inside for the food, we will be able to taste it.”
Mayor Duke thanked the Walmart officials for trusting in and investing in this community. “We are looking forward to a long-term relationship with Walmart,” he said.
Adel’s Walmart Supercenter will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except for Christmas. According to Walmart corporate officials, the Adel store will employ up to 300 associates for full-time and part-time positions.
On Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24, local residents joined a Big Family Welcome celebration; they enjoyed fun family activities and free food samples while supplies lasted.
