Custom Ag Formulators, the first industry to locate in the 3,000-acre South Cook Industrial District on U.S. Highway south of Adel, started production in August. The new plant is expected to be running full force when its operating season gets underway in January.
The plant has five employees at this point and will bring another five to seven on board by the first of 2017, said Susan Griffin, office manager. Custom Ag Formulators, a national and international provider of agricultural products, offers a diverse assortment of liquid fertilizers, adjuvants, nutrients, frost protectants, insect attractants, and various specialty products.
Products from the Adel plant are shipped to farm supply distributors across the Southern United States, said Production Manager Lenny Atkins.
The plant blends the products in a 1,000-gallon tank and a 2,000-gallon tank. The liquid fertilizer then is poured into 2- 1/2 gallon jugs on the state-ofthe-art, computerized bottling line (12 are bottled at the time in 45 seconds). The jugs are capped, labeled, heat-sealed, and packaged on the line. Anyone who visits the plant will be impressed at how clean and immaculate even the production area is kept. There are no noxious fumes or odors within or outside the facility.
Custom Ag Formulators plans to build a dry fertilizer plant in coming months at the same location. The two plants will have 30 to 40 employees. A rail spur will soon be added for transporting the company’sproducts by train.
In March 2004, the company moved into their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters in Fresno, Calif., enabling them to increase their production abilities in both liquid and dry blending.
In 2004, the company also partnered with Growth Ag, a well-known Australian distributor, and opened a second bottling facility in Australia. The Goondiwindi location has enabled faster shipping to the Southern Hemisphere (destinations in New Zealand and Asia/Singapore) while maintaining the same quality bottling and packaging standards that is offered in Custom Ag’s Fresno facility.
Jerry Steward serves as CEO of the familyowned company. Steward’s two sons, Ryan and Cameron, work with him in the business, which was founded in 1998. They are joined by the Murray family (a husband and wife) as owners of the company.
