Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and a group of state officials took a flight to the Cook County Airport on Wednesday, April 22, so he, Georgia’s First Lady Sandra Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, Secretary of State Brian Kemp, the Deals’ good friends Jimmy and Quay Allen, State Rep. Allen Peake (Macon), State Rep. Matt Ramsey (Peachtree City), State Sen. Steve Gooch (Dahlonega), and others could drive on to the visitation at the Threatte Center in Lakeland for former State Rep. Jay Shaw, who passed away last week.
Gov. Deal shared how he valued his friendship with Mr. Shaw and the important role Mr. Shaw, a State Transportation Board member and chairman, had in improving transportation and fostering economic development throughout the State of Georgia. Mr. Shaw's passing was a great loss to the citizens of this state, Gov. Deal said.
Gov. Deal remarked that the revitalized airport with a new terminal buildingand hangars is “a beautiful facility.” The airport upgrade is a great example of what state and federal funds, along with local Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax monies, can do in concert for much needed local building projects, he said. Such updated airport facilities have a major role in economic development, helping attract new industries to communities, Gov. Deal emphasized.
The Governor said the recently passed state transportation bill will levy an aviation fuel tax that may only be used for airport improvements across Georgia, and the local facilities could benefit from those funds.
